Math Fairs

Graphic for Math FairThe North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics sponsors three regional Math Fairs each spring. The best projects qualify for the State Math Fair. Only students attending school in North Carolina are eligible to enter.

Projects may be entered in the following categories:

  • Grades K-2 (Individual or Class Projects)

  • Grades 3-4 (Individual or Class Projects)

  • Grades 5-6 (Individual or Class Projects)

  • Grades 7-8 (Individual Projects)

  • Grades 9-12 (Individual Projects)

Class projects must involve a majority of the students in that class. Individual projects involve one or two students only. Projects must be pre-registered to be accepted for competition. During the judging, each project must be represented by one or two students whose names appear on the project.

2024 First Round Math Fairs

Thank you all for your patience as we have been working to get Math Fairs back up and running after the long break due to the pandemic. In addition to the challenges that come with re-starting after such a long break, we have had leadership changes at all levels of the math fair committee. We were able to run the program last year in a limited format, and are still in a rebuilding phase this year.

There will be regional math fairs in the Eastern and Western regions this year. There is currently not a Central Region leader so there will not be a fair in that region this year. The NCCTM Math Fair rules state that a student attending school in North Carolina can register to participate in any regional fair. There is a limit of three projects per school per category at the regional level, but otherwise, there is no restriction that would prevent a student from the Central Region signing up to participate in one of the other regional fairs. Note: a student may participate in only one regional fair.

NCCTM Statement on Equitable Access to Quality Mathematics Instruction

Students need to experience mathematics in ways that allow them to be successful and that give them the power to change the world. This experience needs to be delivered with both excellence and equality while resonating with the lives of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, and all marginalized peoples. Racism cannot be tolerated, and we as teachers must be vigilant that we do not tolerate nor contribute to racism, bias, hate, or violence in our classrooms.
